CARE INSTRUCTIONS
CARING FOR YOUR FURNITURE
Every David Shaw piece is made to last. A few simple habits will keep yours looking and performing beautifully for years to come.
01
FABRIC
CHECK YOUR CARE LABEL
We sew a fabric care label into the zip of a cushion or onto the underside of your piece. Always refer to it before attempting any cleaning.
VACUUM WEEKLY
Dust settles on fabric every day and is abrasive. At least once a week, vacuum all surfaces and cushions using an upholstery attachment.
PROTECT FROM SUNLIGHT
Sensible window treatments, rotating cushions and occasionally rearranging your furniture help minimise colour loss and fibre damage caused by UV exposure.
Fabric warranties are given by the fabric company, not by David Shaw Limited.
02
LEATHER
Leather is one of the most durable coverings for furniture. Treat it regularly with tannery-approved leather care products. We recommend Pelle leather care products.
03
CUSHIONS
Your David Shaw cushions are crafted using premium feather and fibre fillings, chosen for their comfort, softness and the way they mould naturally to the body. Like all natural fillings, they need regular care to keep their shape and loft.
FLUFF AND PLUMP
After use, lift each cushion and give it a firm shake. Massage the filling from each corner back toward the centre, then smooth the surface to restore volume.
Every few days, give each cushion a good shake out so the feathers can move, breathe and hold their shape.
ROTATE
Rotate seat and back cushions regularly for even wear: weekly for sofas in daily use, monthly for occasional seating.
REVERSE
Where cushions are reversible, turn them over every few weeks. Alternating the top and bottom keeps an even appearance and extends the life of your furniture.
A NATURAL SETTLING
Feather-filled cushions are designed to settle over time. This is a natural characteristic, not a fault, and gives a softer, more relaxed seat than solid foam. Some foams can also lose a little of their initial firmness with use.
LONG-TERM CARE
After years of use, cushions that have lost their original loft can often be professionally refilled or rejuvenated rather than replaced, extending the life of your furniture for many more years.
04
TIMBER
EVERYDAY CARE
Wipe timber down with a slightly damp cloth.
NO SILICONE
If you use furniture polish, it must not contain silicone. Silicone can soften the special coatings that protect the look and character of the timber.
05
STONE
CLEANING
Clean and shine smooth stone with a clear household wax. Clean rough or textured stone with a mild detergent solution of detergent powder mixed with water.
Always wipe dry straight away with a clean, dry cloth, and don't let liquid sit on the surface.
PROTECT THE SURFACE
Use coasters under cups and glasses. Fossil stone is naturally porous, so coloured drinks can stain the surface and be hard to remove.
INDOOR USE ONLY
Our stone pieces are made for indoor use and are not recommended outdoors.
Stone is a natural material, so each piece will vary in colour from slab to slab.
06
THE FRAME
SIT WELL
Avoid sitting on the edges of arms or cushions. It causes premature wear to the fabric and cushion inners, and can distort the padding under the fabric.
07
OUTDOOR FURNITURE
REGULAR UPKEEP
Brush off dirt and debris as often as you can, before it becomes embedded in the fabric and causes permanent staining.
At least once a week, vacuum all surfaces and cushions using an upholstery attachment.
AFTER RAIN
If your sofa gets wet, let the fabric air dry thoroughly. Moisture left sitting in the fabric can lead to mould and mildew. Remove excess water from timber after heavy rainfall.
CUSHIONS AND FABRIC
Check the maintenance advice for your fabric. If your furniture is undercover, put the cushions in the sun from time to time to dry out. Once dry, vacuum off any loose leaves or dirt to avoid staining.
OUTDOOR TIMBER
Wipe down with a slightly damp cloth, and never use a polish that contains silicone. We recommend re-staining outdoor timber every 18 to 24 months.
